Exhumed body will be reburied by the Midlothian Council
Scotland, Oct 25: Last wish of a person has to be fulfilled at any cost. The body of a man who want his wife to be buried near him has to be exhumed so as to fulfil his final wish. As the Midlothian council denied any room for his surviving wife.
A plot for three people was bought in 1976 and was already occupied by another relative and the man died earlier this year. He wished his wife to be buried alongside his graveyard. After three days of his funeral authorities from Midlothian Council informed the family that there was no room in the plot for anyone else.
Shocked over this move by the Council officials, the relatives gave a complaint to public Service Ombudsman in Scotland stating that they should have to be informed about this prior to the funeral so that the couple could be buried somewhere else. Soon after the complaint the watchdogs upheld the Midlothian Council by ordering the Council authorities to review its burial grounds notification procedures.
The investigation of the plot showed that there was a soil collapse in the plot even before the man’s funeral which was held on January 20 this year. The earnest support of the burial staffs has helped in the smooth conduct of the funeral.
While commenting on this Ombudsman Professor Alice Brown said: “As the service was already taking place, nothing was done at that time to inform the family about the potential subsequent problems. The family’s funeral director then called on January 23 to say that the council now felt the plot was full up.
If the family came to know this in advance, they would have made alternative arrangements to ensure that the complainant’s mother and father could be buried together in a separate lair.”
The Midlothian Council has made necessary arrangement to exhume the body of the man and rebury it in a more suitable location without any cost being paid by the family. The council also showed willingness to review its burial notification procedures.
