Its ordeal for Gordon and the party
Scotland, Dec 8: The controversy surrounding the illegal donations obtained by Charlie Gordon, the MSP of the Scottish Labour Party has already created tremor in the political circle. The opponents were demanding his resignation but he promised to stay. The former leader of Glasgow City Council, Mr Charlie Gordon is under the fire because of the two donations he accepted from Paul Green, a Jersey-based businessman. It is termed illegal as Mr Green is not a citizen of the UK and he has no rights to vote.
This controversy is turning out as a headache for the Scottish Labour Party and it also questions the future of the new leader. As the allegation emerged out it was widely expected that Mr Gordon is expected to quit. However the MSP of the Glasgow Cathcart who resigned as the Scottish Labour party’s transport spokesman stated that he will remain in the post until the investigations of the Electoral Commission is over.
Mr Gordon has kept himself away from the Labour Party. The decisions taken by him are expected to pat badly during the oncoming by-election and also left the possibilities of Gordon being a scapegoat to bear the grunt of the Election Commission’s investigation.
In a video statement Mr Gordon justified his stand. While commenting on the issue he said: “Previous week I understand that I committed a serious mistake by accepting donations that amounts to £1,000. With in no time I responded and had tendered my apology to those concerned. I was misled and I also resigned from the post of shadow transport minister. I also conveyed the information to the Election Commission authorities and they are now in a discussion with me and I cannot disclose anymore.”
The final outcome of the investigation will decide the fate of the emerging leader.
