Liquor prices all set to surge in New Year
December, 14
The year to come will make the Scot drinkers more stressed as they have to pay a bit more to get their drink. This jump in the liquor price is said to be due to the rise in the price of barley in the market. Meanwhile it is also noticed that with the increase in the demand for food and drink products in the market, prices too have been show an upward trend. While, with the festive season on the door this sudden increase in the prices of brews will make it much bitter.
Even the jump in the prices of raw materials like barley was unpredicted and it took the brewers for a shock. All this hike in price is also due to the bad weather which destroyed the crop and reduced the yield. This current trend is hinting towards a new year with a increased price tags for such hard drinks. According to Paul Waterson, of the Scottish Licensed Trade Application, “We have been a nation of take-home drinkers for some time now, because of the sharp difference between the price in the pub and the artificially low price in the supermarket. The drinker in the pub is effectively subsidising the discounts in the supermarket.”
With such a huge difference in the prices of brewages in pubs and supermarkets this price rise would make the pubs to fight a hard battle to remain in the competition in Scotland. It is also seen that the harvest failure has been one of the main reason for this hike in the brew rates. Amidst all this the average alcohol consumption of people has increased with 14.3 units per person a week with previous of 10.8 units.
All this hints that there is a tough time in the offing for the boozers in the coming year and also some challenging times for the market.
