Parents ID will be checked before enrolling pupils
Scotland, Jan 8: As an attempt to confirm the identity of pupils the East Renfrewshire council will introduce new security measures during the school admission. Parents are asked to show their council tax bill and utility bill to prove their eligibility to enrol their children to the school. This attempt is in the backdrop of increasing tendency of the parents who use relative’s address or by hiring a house temporarily to prove themselves eligible for a school seats.
While commenting on this East Renfrewshire Council spokesman said: “For the past two to three years we had identified up to 20 people who gave wrong information about their identity. The actual number will be far greater than that. If you are allowing people to continue with this fraudulent approach then your own pupils could be denied the opportunity that could be challenged legally.”
He further added that: “The usual way of fraud is to give fake address and they can save up to £10,000 as the house prices are flexible in the school neighbourhood. Legal action is what needed to counter this but it could be used in the future.”
Meanwhile East Renfrewshire’s director of education, John Wilson said: “We will give priority to the parents and children of East Renfrewshire and we will ensure that their pupils will get the chance they deserve by getting rid of the pupils who have no rights to get enrolled.”
Most of the parents from Glasgow’s Castlemilk area are eager to enrol their children in any of the East Renfrewshire schools. East Renfrewshire is considered as the top performing local authority and Glasgow is among the less performing side.
