Campaign to enlist Abbey in World Heritage list
Scotland, Feb 9: The campaigners supporting the historic Scottish abbey feel that it deserve a place in the World Heritage list. They are intensifying the campaign to gain more support for their initiative. The Arbroath Abbey nestles several historical significance to its credit as the Declaration of Arbroath was drafted in 1320 here that recommends the Pope to approve Scotland’s independence.
The campaigners feel that the document plays a vital role in shaping ideas across the world that fulfils the requirement of the United Nation’s World Heritage criteria. If the campaign turns out successful then it will be enlisted with Taj Mahal and Acropolis.
According to Abbey campaigner Jim Miller, the abbey is the sleeping giant of Scottish tourism and is considered as a prestige symbol. The status of being a World Heritage site helps in protecting the under-threat site. The Declaration of Arbroath was a crucial declaration and marks the beginning of democracy.
Jim also asked the people to express their support to book a place for this historical place. The professor of Scottish history at Glasgow University, Ted Cowan said that the Declaration of Arbroath has universal significance. It is an excellent idea because of its historical link and the beauty of the site.
In total there are four World Heritage sites in Scotland that include St Kilda, Edinburgh old and new towns, New Lanark and Neolithic Orkney. The campaign supporting the 12 century Arbroath Abbey was formed two years ago, but it is gaining momentum during the recent days. Local support mainly from the young generation is the deciding factor to win the United Nations status.
