You need to be 18 now to buy tobacco
July, 1
In a positive announcement the legal age to buy tobacco products is increased from 16 to 18. It was noticed that children are easily getting to smoking habits with the easy availability of tobacco to them at such an early age. The new change will come into effect from September 1.
It was known that young children are easily carried away by such abusive addictives like alcohol and tobacco. If we look back, we can easily see how young teenagers are used to consuming alcohol more often without any fear of its hazards. Meanwhile tobacco is also largely consumed by young kids who get into the smoking habits at early age.
Every year huge number of people dies with excessive consumption of tobacco and there is a need for a change in the way it is sold. This change in age from 16 to 18 will some how slow down the open sale of such tobacco products to these young lads.
Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said this is just a first step towards tackling this major threat. We need to control this problem at the grass root level and by increasing the legal age, we can achieve at least some support.
Along with this new change many educational programmes and promotional campaigns will be also started highlighting the hazards of smoking to the public.
