Medical student saves her fiancés life

Published by Praveen under Every Day, General, Health

July, 12

No one may have even dreamt that Claire Lomas’s first patient would be her very own fiancé. The medical student was still wearing her ceremonial robes when her fiancé Jamie Taylor began to turn blue at the restaurant. The couple were out for a meal with friends and their family celebrating the success at the University.

Jamie Taylor, while having his meal swallowed a piece of chicken very quickly and was not able to draw his breath. On seeing her fiancé in such a terrible state Claire suddenly stepped in and performed the Heimlich manoeuvre in order to clear his airways.

The couple who were there to enjoy and celebrate the occasion could have never ever thought this could be such a terrorising meal for them. Jamie was glad to get his breath back and more than him Claire was happy to give her fiancé a new life.

Docs voice for use of warning images on alcohol bottles

Published by Praveen under Crime, Drink, Health

July, 10

If you find graphic images of diseased livers on alcohol bottles then don’t be surprised, as the docs have proposed the use of such graphic images as a warning for drinkers. This proposal came as a result of the trend of excessive consumption of alcohol in the UK. In the BMA conference in Edinburgh it was known that the alcohol consumption in the UK had doubled since 1960. It is expected that such warnings on the bottles of beer and wine will help to reduce the consumption to some extent.

It is clearly known that in recent times their has been a major upward trend in the drinking culture in the UK. This in turn is resulting to more and more alcohol related ailments and also is giving rise to more crimes. Doctors have raised the need to use graphic images on alcohol products and also such posters in pubs and clubs where alcohol is largely served.

UK has been fighting with the severe problem of binge drinking from a long time and also in recent year’s cases of under age drinking has come up as a major concern. With such an easy availability of alcohol to all, this problem has become a major problem now. To overcome this problem such unpleasant images on alcohol bottles, can and posters will help to some extent.

According to doctor Raj Narula, a urologist at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, Wales, excessive consumption of alcohol causes cirrhosis of the liver which leads to cancer. Its time to take some decisive step to combat this problem, slowly this problem is taking shape of an epidemic and we need to fight it out before its too late. He said we have to start from an early age targeting teenagers who are more vulnerable to this drinking culture.

So the day is not far when we can see images displaying the hazards of consuming alcohol on liquor bottles.

Traffic halts for frogs

Published by Praveen under Every Day, General

July, 5

The traffic was brought to a stand still yesterday, not because of any procession or due to security reasons, but to allow thousands of tiny frogs and toads to leave the loch. It was a spectacular sight watching those tiny toads and frogs, some even size of the tip of a little finger making their way to Arthur’s Seat.

People were amazed to see this sight with frogs and toads crossing the streets one after another. Experts have said that this year the hatching was a bit earlier compared to previous year, mainly due to the warmer weather. The tiny toads were jumping around like a happy bunch eager to adapt to the habitat.

To make sure these tiny toads don’t get into the drains they were covered to stop them falling into it.

Malaria cases on the rise in UK

Published by Praveen under Every Day, Health

July, 4

UK is facing a serious threat of malaria these days with an increase in the number of malaria cases in the recent years. It is feared that more and more fresh cases of this disease is brought back of the country from foreign trips. Study has revealed that the country has recorded 6753 cases of malaria during 2002-06. These recent figures have raised a concern over the speedy growth of this disease in UK.

The reports of the study has showed that the main reason for such an increase in the cases of malaria in the UK is due to the frequent trips by people to abroad, specially West Africa. Looking at the figures revealed by the British Medical Journal we can find that there has been an increase of 30 percent in the number of Malaria cases in past 15 years.

As we all know that Malaria is caused by mosquito bites and can be a fatal disease if not diagnosed early. It was also noted that with the change in time people are frequently visiting outside UK which makes them vulnerable to such diseases. Figures also showed that about 183 people lost their life by the impact of this disease in UK.

There is a need for people traveling out UK to be more conscious of this disease, especially if they are moving to sub-Saharan and West African countries where one can easily be a victim of malaria.

New way to fight out cancer

Published by Praveen under Every Day, General, Health

July, 2

Study has shown that Broccoli can fight out prostate cancer by altering the activity levels of genes involved in tumour growth. This discovery was made by the scientist after a detailed study on its impact to cancer patients.

The study was conducted on two groups of men who were given broccoli in their normal diet for a year. It was found that the group of men who were given broccoli-rich diet happened to have changes in their gene activity, with inflammation in the Prostate. Meanwhile taking broccoli in little quantity in daily diet helps to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, and also lowers the possibility of aggressive cancer.

Scientists are still studying on this recent discovery and are finding out how really it will benefit the cancer patients at large. It is also said that this study is one of its kind in which gene expression in a target tissue has been studied after a dietary intervention. Scientist have also expressed that this study has proved that diets which are rich in cruciferous vegetables help to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

You need to be 18 now to buy tobacco

Published by Praveen under Every Day, Health

July, 1

In a positive announcement the legal age to buy tobacco products is increased from 16 to 18. It was noticed that children are easily getting to smoking habits with the easy availability of tobacco to them at such an early age. The new change will come into effect from September 1.

It was known that young children are easily carried away by such abusive addictives like alcohol and tobacco. If we look back, we can easily see how young teenagers are used to consuming alcohol more often without any fear of its hazards. Meanwhile tobacco is also largely consumed by young kids who get into the smoking habits at early age.

Every year huge number of people dies with excessive consumption of tobacco and there is a need for a change in the way it is sold. This change in age from 16 to 18 will some how slow down the open sale of such tobacco products to these young lads.

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said this is just a first step towards tackling this major threat. We need to control this problem at the grass root level and by increasing the legal age, we can achieve at least some support.

Along with this new change many educational programmes and promotional campaigns will be also started highlighting the hazards of smoking to the public.
